Imaginez un vampire qui se nourrit du sang de sa propre âme -

I have always claimed that learning a new language widens your horizons. What I mean is that when you learn a new language, you gain a greater perception of the way people use this language. It is a portal to the speakers’ culture.

But I have never claimed though that language - itself - is important. Quite the opposite, I deeply distrust language. Yes, I’m a hater. To continue the argument without any philosophical basis would be quite foolish, so, I’ll restrict myself to quoting a few fellow haters.

“If everything is perfect, language is useless. This is true for animals. If animals don’t speak, it’s because everything’s perfect for them. If one day they start to speak, it will be because the world has lost a certain sort of perfection.” - Jean Baudrillard

“As soon as there is language, generality has entered the scene.” - Jacques Derrida

“Chance does not speak essentially through words nor can it be seen in their convolution. It is the eruption of language, its sudden appearance. It’s not a night twinkle with stars, an illuminated sleep, nor a drowsy vigil. It is the very edge of consciousness.” - Michel Foucault

“Ich werde Ihnen ein furchtbares Geheimnis verraten: die Sprache ist die Strafe. In sie müssen alle Dinge eingehen und in ihr müssen sie wieder vergehen nach ihrer Schuld und dem Ausmaß ihrer Schuld.” - Ingeborg Bachmann

“In other words, the man who is born into existence deals first with language; this is a given. He is even caught in it before his birth.” - Jacques Lacan

“How truly language must be regarded as a hindrance to thought, though the necessary instrument of it, we shall clearly perceive on remembering the comparative force with which simple ideas are communicated by signs. To say, “Leave the room,” is less expressive than to point to the door. Place a finger on the lips is more forcible than whispering, “Do not speak.” A beck of the hand is better than, “Come here.” No phrase can convey the idea of surprise so vividly as opening the eyes and raising the eyebrows. A shrug of the shoulders would lose much by translation into words.” - Herbert Spencer

And here’s more on my ancestors’ distrust of language.
